Self care vs self love, and what boring self care is

If you’ve been reading my blog, then you’ve probably realised by now that I’m a big lover of self care and everything it stands for. However, it hasn’t always been this way.

When I was younger I used to follow this one particular blogger who focused their whole blog around self love, and how it would change your world. But the problem was, it was all too big for me.

It was buying things, it was taking hours out of your day to enjoy a bubble bath, it was dying your hair, it was getting tattoos… and so on! I mean, if that’s your idea of self care, then you do you! And don’t feel bad for that.

But if that all sounds so far away like it did for me, then hopefully this post might help.

My self care alphabet

I covered what self care is in my last post, but didn’t actually include any ideas of what self care can look like, so I thought I’d write down some ideas in case anyone is struggling for where to start.

However, it’s important to remember that self care will most likely look different for each of us. As it’s self care, and we’re all different people. Please don’t feel as if you have to like and do everything on this list (I definitely don’t!), and please also don’t feel as if you have to like anything on it either.

What even is self care?

What even is self care?

After publishing my last post, I quickly realised that I had started a whole blog around self care without actually mentioning what self care is. Or what it isn’t. So here is the post that probably should have been my first.

So, what is self care?

Self care is any activity we do to take care of our health. And, that health can be our mental, physical or emotional health – self care is not limited to just one type of activity, or just one type of benefit.

My four favourite self care methods for managing distress

In my experience a lot of self care tips seem to focus on looking after ourselves when we have energy, time, or we feel well enough to care. 

Sometimes the tips can include these big ideas, that when you’re struggling to get out of bed in the morning can seem impossible. And so, I used to give up and start to believe that self care wasn’t for people like me. 

Which is silly, because you know when else we need self care? When we feel bad. When we’re in distress. When we’re struggling to care anymore.
